Privacy Policy
Last updated 2 October 2026
AI Friend exists because people wanted somewhere private to talk. This page explains, in plain language, what stays on your phone, the little we collect, and how to erase it.
The short version
- Your conversations are encrypted and stored on your device. We do not keep a copy of your chat history on our servers, and we cannot read it.
- We do not ask for your name, phone number, address book, photos, or location.
- You do not need an account to use AI Friend.
- We do not sell your personal information, and we never have.
- Uninstalling the app deletes your conversations from your device permanently.
The rest of this page is the detail behind those five points. If anything here is unclear, email support@aifriendapp.com and we will answer in plain language.
Who this policy covers
This policy applies to the AI Friend Android app and to this website. It is published by AI Friend(“we”, “us”), the developer of AI Friend. Where this page says “the app”, it means AI Friend installed on your own device.
Your conversations
Your messages and your companion’s replies are written to an encrypted database inside the app’s private storage on your phone. They are not uploaded to our servers, not backed up to our cloud, and not visible to anyone at AI Friend. If you turn on the biometric lock, that local database can only be opened after your device verifies your fingerprint or face.
This has a practical consequence you should know about: if you lose your phone or uninstall the app, your conversation history is gone. We cannot restore it for you, because we never had it.
How replies are generated
To write a reply, an AI model has to process what you just said. The text of your message is sent over an encrypted connection (TLS) to the model that generates the response, used only to produce that reply, and then discarded. It is not attached to a profile about you, not reviewed by our staff, and not used to train models. Only what is needed for the reply is transmitted — never your whole history, and nothing that identifies you by name.
Memory and first texts
When your companion remembers something about you, that memory is stored on your device alongside the conversation. When your companion texts you first, the message is composed and scheduled by the app on your phone; a push service may be used to wake the app, but the content you see is assembled locally.
What we do collect
We keep this list deliberately short.
In the app
- Anonymous usage and crash data — for example that the app was opened, that a screen was viewed, or that a crash happened and the technical details of it. This is tied to a random identifier, not to your name or email, and it never includes the content of your messages.
- Purchase status — if you buy a subscription or an in-app purchase, Google Play handles the payment and tells the app whether your purchase is active. We never see your card number.
On this website
- Product analytics— we use PostHog to count visits and to see which buttons people press on this page, such as “Continue” or “Install on Android”. It tells us whether the page is working. PostHog also records the technical details your browser sends to any website: approximate region, referring page, browser and device type.
- The iPhone waitlist — the form is hosted by Google Forms, and we receive whatever you type into it, normally just an email address. We use it only to tell you when the iPhone version is ready.
- Email you send us — if you write to support, we keep that email so we can reply and follow up.
What we never collect
- The content of your conversations.
- Your contacts, call logs, text messages, photos, or files.
- Your precise location.
- Microphone or camera access taken in the background.
- Data about you bought from, or sold to, data brokers or ad networks.
Why we use what we collect
- To keep the app running and to fix crashes and bugs.
- To understand which features people use, so we build the right ones next.
- To deliver and support purchases you choose to make.
- To answer your support emails.
- To detect abuse of the service and to comply with the law.
If you are in the UK or the EEA, our lawful bases are your consent (analytics and the waitlist), performance of our contract with you (providing the app and your purchases), and our legitimate interests (keeping the service secure and working).
Who we share data with
We do not sell your personal information. We share the limited data above with service providers who process it on our behalf and may not use it for their own purposes:
- Google Play — app distribution, crash reporting, and payments.
- PostHog — anonymous product analytics for this website and the app.
- Google Forms — the iPhone waitlist signup.
- Our AI model provider — processes the text of a message in order to generate the reply, as described above.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect someone from serious harm. Because your conversations are not on our servers, a legal request for your chat history is something we are unable to satisfy.
International transfers
Our providers may process data in the United States and other countries. Where data leaves the UK or the EEA, transfers are covered by appropriate safeguards such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses.
How long we keep things
- Conversations — on your device, for as long as you keep them. We hold no copy.
- Analytics and crash data — deleted or anonymised within 24 months.
- Waitlist email addresses — until the iPhone version launches, or until you ask us to remove you.
- Support emails — up to 24 months after the conversation ends.
- Purchase records — as long as tax and accounting law requires.
Deleting your data
- Your conversations: delete a chat inside the app, or uninstall AI Friend. Either one removes the encrypted local database from your device, and the deletion is permanent.
- Everything else: email support@aifriendapp.com from the address you contacted us with, and we will delete the analytics, waitlist and support records associated with you. We will confirm within 30 days.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you have the right to ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, to correct it, to delete it, to restrict or object to how we use it, and to withdraw consent to analytics at any time. If you are in California, you also have the right to know what we collect, to delete it, and not to be treated differently for exercising those rights — and we confirm again that we do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioural advertising.
To exercise any of these, email support@aifriendapp.com. We do not charge for it, and we will not ask you for more identifying information than we need. In practice the amount of data we can return is small, by design. If you are in the UK or the EEA and you are unhappy with our response, you can complain to your national data protection authority.
Children
AI Friend is for adults. It is not intended for anyone under 18, and we do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has used the app and given us data, email us and we will delete it.
Security
Conversations are encrypted at rest on your device, the biometric lock is available if you want it, and everything the app sends over the network uses TLS. No system is perfect, but keeping your messages off our servers removes the single biggest risk to them: us.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page, and for anything significant we will tell you inside the app before the change takes effect. We will not start collecting your conversations without asking you first.
